The Moscow City Court sentenced historian Tamara Eidelman to eight years in prison in the case of “fakes about the army and the rehabilitation of Nazism”
The court found that in May 2025, Tamara Eidelman published a video recording “containing negative statements about the USSR’s actions during the Great Patriotic War, as well as about Great Patriotic War veterans. In July of that year, the historian also disseminated false information about the Russian Armed Forces on social media, under the guise of credible reports.”
Tamara Eidelman: Representatives of more than 190 nationalities live in modern Russia. The country’s geography and ethnic composition are closely intertwined with the history of conquest of the lands where the indigenous populations lived. Different peoples have their own languages, cultures, religions, and cuisines. How do indigenous nations live in modern Russia, and how do they strive to preserve their national identity? She touched on themes of colonization, imperial ideas, and national consciousness, which are often used to describe the relationship between the Russian state and its peoples, from Ivan the Terrible to Vladimir Putin.
I’m glad to know her; Tamara Eidelman always told truthful stories about the colonized peoples of Muscovy. As for Eidelman’s trial, Putin’s Russia has definitively transformed into a fascist state, no different from Adolf Hitler’s Nazism. Incidentally, such historians are very few in Russia; you can count them on the fingers of one hand.
